2022 Chevy Blazer Review, Pricing, and Specs

The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer model feels and is definitely a middle child in the Chevrolet SUV lineup. While it’s not as big and hunky as the Traverse or the Equinox, it gives the riders plenty of space in the two-row design.

The Chevy Blazer takes on its foes with much assertiveness, and the aggressive design will turn heads wherever it goes. The visual sportiness seems to be inspired by Chevy’s iconic Camaro. The new Chevrolet Blazer was revived in 2019 to take advantage of the increasing sales of SUVs in developed and developing markets.

You get several trim levels and various customization options to get you the car you want. The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer loses its lowest trims, the L and 1LT trim, and the base 193HP, 2.5-liter inline-four engine. Now, you only get the Chevrolet Blazer with two engine options: a 2.0-liter sporty turbocharged inline-four engine producing 228HP and a 3.6-liter V6 producing 308 Horsepower.

Now that there is no base trim, you can only get the Blazer in 2LT, 3LT, RS, and Premier trims. You can also choose between AWD and FWD for all the variants, although the 2LT is restricted to the turbocharged inline-four engine, and the RS is reserved for the V6. You can add the premium trim to get several luxury features like ventilated seats, heated rear seats, and a Bose sound system, among other luxuries.

The Blazer has gotten some following in recent years after its revival, even though the 2019 version wasn’t well received among the fans of the old 4×4 K5 and S-10 Blazer. The Blazer has captured the middle space in the Toyota SUV lineup and offers better handling and cornering ability with its strong brakes and torque vectoring in the higher models.

For warranty, the Chevrolet Blazer comes with a limited warranty for three years or 36000 miles and a powertrain warranty for five years or 60000 miles. You also get one free maintenance in the first year of purchase.

What’s New For 2022?

For the 2022 Chevrolet Blazer, you don’t get the previous base variant’s 2.5-liter inline-four engine and the base trims. However, the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine is now standard. You also get the Trailering package as standard with all the AWD variants, and it’s optional with the FWD models.

You also get two new colors, the Nitro Yellow Metallic and the Blue Glow Metallic. With the 2022 Chevy Blazer, you can add an enhanced convenience package on top of the premier line for added comfort. It also has a two-tone roof as an option for all the models except the top-of-the-line Premier trim.

Impressive Performance For A Mid-Size SUV

The Blazer comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine that produces 228HP and 258 lb-ft of torque. The 3.6-liter V6 produces 308HP and 270 lb-ft of torque and is exclusive to the RS trim in the Blazer. You can get the V6 in the 3LT and the Premier as an extra for an additional $500. Paired with its 9-speed automatic transmission, you get one of the smoothest rides in the segment.

The Blazer raw performance isn’t quite on par with other popular cars in the segment, like the Hyundai Santa Fe with a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four producing 281HP and the Ford Edge with its 2.0-liter turbo inline-four producing 250HP.

However, the Blazer has gained popularity due to its excellent handling and driving experience. It feels responsive, light-weighted, and quite engaging on turns.

The turbocharged inline-four with the FWD trim has plenty of power for your daily city rides and long runs on the highway. You can spice it up a little by adding the all-wheel drive option. The real fun sits inside the V6-powered Blazer RS, which is quick on turns and provides plenty of acceleration the all-wheel drive in this trim comes with torque vectoring which increases your control of the vehicle.

Many customers have reviewed the Blazer as the best SUV from Chevrolet by a mile, and even without the RS trim, it is much more engaging than its competitors. The Chevrolet Blazer does well on downshifts to give that extra burst of acceleration when needed, and its crisp steering wheel feedback keeps your new car entertaining even on city rides.

Coming to practicality, the turbocharged inline-four can tow up to 1500 pounds, while the V6 engine can tow up to 4500 pounds. We recommend opting for the all-wheel drive option, which comes at an additional $2700 for the 2LT and 3LT versions, to uplift your driving experience and take on roads with much aggression.

Fuel Economy On Par With The Competition

Although an exciting ride, the Blazer takes up much fuel in its endeavours. The turbocharged inline-four has an EPA-rated mileage of up to 22mp city and 29mpg for highways. This slightly drops with the all-wheel drive option having up to 22mpg for the city and 27mpg for highways.

The V6, on the other hand, gets only 19mpg in the city and 27mpg for the highway in Front-Wheel Drive versions. With the AWD trim, you get 19mpg in the city and 26mpg for highways. Now, this may seem low, but it’s definitely more than average in the segment. For example, the Ford Edge AWD gets only a combined 23mpg with the turbocharged inline-four, and its turbocharged V6 gives a combined 21mpg.

A Comfy Interior With Lots Of Tech

The Chevrolet Blazer takes its interior from the Camaro with its innovative climate control, including round air vents below the centre stack. You get some soft-touch surfaces scattered around the cabin, with the higher models even getting flashier stuff like leather and premium materials.

The cabin is quite spacy, although Chevy could’ve given a bit more legroom for the rear passengers considering its competition in the likes of Santa Fe and the Ford Edge. The second row of seats lacks somewhat in comfort compared to its competition.

2022 Chevy Blazer Infotainment System

With the Premium trim, you get a few comfort features like ambient lighting, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats. All Blazer models have the same 8-inch infotainment system with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You get navigation as standard in RS and Premium trims. However, it’s optional on the 3LT.

There is also an option for an 8-speaker Bose audio system in all the trims except the base 2LT. Wi-Fi hotspots and Bluetooth come as connectivity options with the Blazer. The Blazer offers several storage spaces alongside its large cargo trunk throughout the cabin.

2022 Chevy Blazer Cargo

With 31 cubic feet of space as standard, which becomes 64 cubic feet after folding the rear row. You also get a 120V charging port in the front and a power liftgate, making the Blazer a bit more practical. The base Chevrolet Blazer comes with four USB ports including two USB-A and two USB-C ports.

However, the Blazer does not stand a chance in cargo space compared with the competition. Both the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Honda Passport offer higher cargo space at 36.4 cubic feet and 41.2 cubic feet, respectively. The Chevrolet Blazer also has a lower towing capacity than the Passport, with 4500 pounds for its V6 version.

A Standout Design In The Segment

The Blazer has a smart design and stands out in this segment with design cues taken from the Camaro, making it one of the sportiest midsize SUVs. For the 2022 Blazer, you get an option for two-tone color with the RS and LT trims except for the Premier trim. You can also opt for the Redline Edition Package for an extra $1895, which gives you a black grille, some exterior accents, and 20-inch wheels with striking red detail.

The sportiest one is definitely the RS trim with its fine exterior lines and the powerful V6 sitting behind that pretty face.

Excellent Driver Safety And Assistance Tech

2022 Chevy Blazer Interior

The Blazer earns a 5-star rating on the much-acclaimed NHTSA rating in crash testing. It also gets a “good” crash rating from the IIHS but doesn’t get the revered top safety pick designation due to its headlights not matching the requirement.

You get standard driver assistance features, like Lane departure warning, pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist and automatic high-beam, and automatic emergency braking under the Chevy Safety Assist. You also get blindspot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert on all the trims except the 2LT, which gets it in an $1895 package, including other amenities like heated seats, remote start, and an auto-dimming mirror.

There is an option to add adaptive cruise control on the RS, and Premier trims in a $1695 package. Its standard teen driver technology helps coach new drivers by setting speed limits and audio level limits according to you. Hence you can teach your young ones how to drive without keeping them under direct supervision.

How Does The 2022 Chevy Blazer Compare With Its Competition

The Blazer is fighting for its spot in the extremely competitive budget midsize Suv segment. There are some great cars like the Hyundai Santa Fe or the Ford Edge and even the Honda Passport. Let’s look at all these cars to allow you a better judgement of the best possible option for you:

Ford Edge

The Ford Edge is one of the best-selling crossover SUVs in the market because of its value for money. For the 2022 version, there are some minor changes, although you won’t find any striking difference between its predecessor.

The Ford Edge has two similar engine options, including a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine producing 250HP and 280 lb-ft of torque. You also get a twin-turbocharged V6 in the sportier ST trim, producing 335HP and 380 lb-ft of torque. You get AWD as standard in all models with torque vectoring control available. With a 6.1-second 0-60 time in the ST trim, you can expect some fiery rides around town with the V6.

As for safety, the Ford Edge also gets a 5-star NHTSA rating and has several standard safety features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane keep assist. You can also get adaptive cruise control with the higher trims. The 2022 Ford Edge was also the top safety pick for 2022 from IIHS.

As for technology, Ford doesn’t hold back with a 12-inch touchscreen coming standard with all trims with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A six-speaker system is standard. However, you can opt for a 12-speaker Bang & Olfusen sound system with higher trims. Ford also adds twin 4.5-inch digital gauge clustered and wireless charging as options with the Ford Edge.

You get better cargo space in the Ford Edge, but its towing capacity is lower than the V6 Blazer at a maximum towing capacity of up to 3500 pounds. Overall, the Ford Edge is one of the best choices in this segment, with both cars having similar specs in all aspects. However, the Blazer offers better practicality, feels better to drive on turns, and has a better exterior design.

Hyundai Santa Fe

The Hyundai Santa Fe has been a classic mid-size SUV for the average family for decades now. The new 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe comes with four different powertrains, including a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid variant. The new plug-in hybrid is yet to debut nationwide but produces 260HP and runs up to 31 miles on electric-only driving per charge.

The other options include a base 2.5-liter inline-four engine producing 191HP and a more powerful turbocharged inline-four engine producing 277HP. Both of these trims are supported by an 8-speed automatic transmission and can be bought in FWD(standard) or AWD.

The hybrid model has a six-speed automatic and a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine paired with two electric motors to produce 226HP with standard AWD. It may not be as exciting a ride as the Blazer, but you get enough power for city rides, and the steering feedback is just right to give some satisfaction in driving.

Its interior is quite spacy and offers better cargo space than the Blazer. In the technology department, you get either an 8.0-inch or 10.3-inch touchscreen, depending on the trim. It has standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You can also get an optional 630-watt, 12-speaker sound system with higher trims.

Like the Blazer, the Santa Fe also gets a 5-star NHTSA rating with several standard driver-assistance technologies with adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking. You also get a standard lane-departure warning and stop-and-go technology with adaptive cruise control.

Compared to the Ford Edge and the Blazer, the Santa Fe is a legacy pick having several attractive features and top-notch driver safety and assistance ratings. The Hyundai Santa Fe should be the pick for American families with its outstanding practicality and spacious cabin. The Chevy Blazer takes the upper hand with its dynamic driving experience and sportier design while having similar safety and practical features.

Should You Buy The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer?

Now, the Chevy Blazer sits between several choices in the segment with its pricing. It starts at $35,790 for the base 2LT 2.0-liter FWD and maxes out at $45,815 for the V6-powered Chevrolet Blazer RS trim with AWD. Compared to the Santa Fe, which has a range of $28,645 to $44,065 for non-hybrid versions, the Chevy is slightly more expensive. However, its pricing is similar to the Ford Edge, which ranges from $37,440 to $46,240 with standard AWD. It’s also similar to the Honda Passport, which starts at an MSRP of $39,095 with FWD and maxes out at $46,665 with AWD.

Your best choice will be the Chevy Blazer 3LT which starts at $39,990 and can be equipped with the V6 to make it $40,440. You get most of the convenience features from the RS trim and can add the AWD trim for an additional $2700.

We suggest buying the Chevy Blazer if you’re looking for a sportier mid-size SUV on a budget that also offers an impressive driving experience. It’s the perfect choice for all families with a cool dad who isn’t afraid of taking on roads with a bit of aggressiveness.
